Frequently asked QUESTIONS

Below weve answered some of the most common questions we receive about family photography, professional headshots and pet photography on Sydneys Northern Beaches. If you cant find the answer youre looking for, please get in touch!
WHO IS THE BEST FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES?

It feels like there are so many of us to choose from! The best photographer is the one whose style, experience and approach feel right for your family.

When choosing a family photographer, look beyond a handful of beautiful images and consider the overall experience. Do you love their editing style? Do the families in their portfolio look relaxed and natural? Do they have experience working with children of different ages? Will they help with planning, styling and displaying your photographs once the session is over?

It's also worth reading reviews carefully. The best photographers aren't just praised for their photographs – they're often remembered for making families feel comfortable, helping children enjoy the experience and creating images that genuinely reflect who they are.

At The Newport Studio, we believe the best family photographs come from connection rather than perfect posing. Our sessions are designed to be relaxed, fun and pressure-free, allowing your family's personality to shine through naturally. Inspired by documentary and lifestyle photography, we focus on genuine moments, real smiles and the little interactions you'll treasure years from now.

Ultimately, the best family photographer isn't necessarily the most – or least! – expensive or the most popular. It's the photographer whose work makes you feel something and whose approach helps your family feel comfortable enough to be yourselves.

HOW MUCH DOES FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY COST IN SYDNEY?

Family photography prices in Sydney vary enormously, which can make it difficult to compare photographers.

At the lower end of the market, you will find newer photographers or those building their portfolio offering sessions for under $300. While some produce beautiful work, these prices often don't reflect the true cost of running a sustainable photography business and may not include professional editing, product options or ongoing support.

Most established family photographers in Sydney charge anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on their experience, the level of service provided and what is included. Some photographers offer all-inclusive digital packages, while others focus on custom artwork, albums and framed pieces designed to be displayed in your home.

When comparing photographers, it’s worth considering more than just the price. Think about the experience, the consistency of their work, the quality of their products and whether they help guide you through the process from planning your session to enjoying your photographs afterwards.

At The Newport Studio, most families invest between $1,000 and $2,000 on their photography experience and artwork, although there are options both below and above this depending on what you’re looking for. Our sessions are designed to be relaxed and enjoyable, with a focus on creating meaningful photographs that don’t just live on your phone, but become part of your home and family story.

We believe professional photography is an investment in your familys memories, which is why we focus on creating artwork that can be enjoyed every day rather than digital files that may never be seen again.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR FOR A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT?

The best family photo outfits are comfortable, coordinated and timeless.

Rather than matching exactly, we recommend choosing a colour palette that works well together. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, muted blues, greens and warm creams tend to photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family's connection rather than your clothing.

Try to avoid large logos, bright neon colours, busy patterns and clothing with prominent text, as these can be distracting in photographs.

When planning outfits, it's often easiest to start with one person's outfit – usually Mum's – and build the rest of the family's wardrobe around those colours and tones.

Most importantly, choose clothing that feels like you. The goal is to create photographs you'll still love years from now, so timeless is usually better than trendy.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT?

A good professional headshot should help people feel like they already know you before they've met you.

The best headshots are clear, natural and authentic. They communicate professionalism while still reflecting your personality and the way you want to be perceived by clients, employers or colleagues.

Good lighting, flattering angles and a genuine expression are all important, but perhaps the most important element is trust. When someone visits your website, LinkedIn profile or social media, your photograph is often their first impression of you and your business.

A strong headshot should look current, approachable and aligned with your brand. A corporate lawyer, creative designer and wellness coach may all need professional headshots, but the style of image that works best for each person will be different.

Ultimately, the best professional headshots don't just show what you look like. They help communicate who you are.

WHERE CAN I GET PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS ON THE NORTHERN BEACHES?

There are many talented photographers offering professional headshots on Sydney's Northern Beaches, so the right choice will depend on the style of imagery you're looking for and how you plan to use your photographs.

When choosing a headshot photographer, look for someone who specialises in photographing people and whose portfolio feels natural, consistent and professional. It's also worth considering whether they offer guidance with posing, outfit selection and image selection, particularly if you don't enjoy being in front of the camera.

Many business owners use professional headshots across LinkedIn, company websites, social media, speaking engagements, media opportunities and marketing materials, so it's important to choose a photographer who understands both photography and personal branding.

At The Newport Studio, we create professional headshots for business owners, creatives, consultants and professionals across the Northern Beaches. Sessions are relaxed, guided and designed to help even the most camera-shy clients feel comfortable and confident.

ARE PROFESSIONAL FAMILY PHOTOS WORTH IT?

The families we've worked with would say yes – not because of the photographs themselves, but because of what those photographs become over time.

Children grow and change quickly. The everyday moments that feel ordinary today often become the memories we treasure most in years to come. Professional family photography creates a visual record of your family's story at a particular moment in time.

Research has shown that children who grow up seeing family photographs displayed in their homes often develop a stronger sense of belonging and connection to their family story. Family photographs can become part of a child's identity, helping them understand where they belong and who loves them.

Professional family photographs are also one of the few purchases that tend to become more valuable over time. While many things lose their importance as the years pass, photographs only become more meaningful.

For many parents, the greatest value isn't having beautiful images today. It's knowing that years from now, their children will have tangible reminders of the people, relationships and moments that shaped their childhood.

One day, these photographs won't just be pictures.

They'll be part of your family's legacy.

CAN I INCLUDE MY DOG IN A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT?

This is probably the number one question we hear - and the answer is ABSO-fricken-LUTELY!

Some of our favourite family photographs include four-legged family members - and yes, that's newborn sessions too!

For most of our families, dogs aren't just pets – they're a huge part of everyday life. It often feels strange to create family photographs without including them.

The good news is that most dogs don't need any special training or experience to be part of a photoshoot. Whether your dog is calm and obedient or energetic and easily distracted, we work with their personality rather than expecting perfection.

We'll usually begin with photographs that include the whole family before capturing smaller combinations, such as children with their dog, mum and the dog, or individual portraits of your pet. Some of the most meaningful images are often the candid moments – a cuddle, a wet nose, a child wrapping their arms around their best friend or a dog simply looking up at the people they love most.

If your dog is particularly excitable, bringing their favourite treats or a toy can be useful, but don't worry if they're not the world's most obedient dog. We photograph plenty of enthusiastic pups and know a few tricks for keeping their attention when it matters.

At The Newport Studio, dogs are always welcome. Whether you'd like a dedicated pet photography session or simply want your dog included as part of your family photographs, we'll make sure they have their moment in front of the camera too. After all, they're part of the family story.

IS PROFESSIONAL PET PHOTOGRAPHY WORTH IT?

For many pet owners, absolutely.

Our pets are often with us through some of life's biggest moments. They're part of the family, they feature in our daily routines and, for many people, they provide unconditional love and companionship for years.

Unfortunately, our dogs and cats age much faster than we do. It's something many pet owners don't think about until they start noticing grey fur around the muzzle, a slower walk or a favourite spot on the couch that suddenly feels a little too empty.

Professional pet photography is about more than creating beautiful images. It's about capturing your pet's personality, quirks and the special bond you share while they're still very much part of your everyday life.

Some of the reasons our clients choose professional pet photography include:

You probably have hundreds (or thousands) of photos of your pet on your phone, but very few with you in them. Professional pet photography gives you the chance to document the relationship you share and create photographs you'll both be remembered in.

Dogs make incredible artwork. Whether it's a striking portrait of your Labrador, a playful image of your Cavoodle or a soulful black-and-white portrait of your senior dog, pet portraits can become some of the most unique and meaningful pieces of artwork in your home.

Many people tell us that black dogs are difficult to photograph. While this can be true in certain lighting conditions, it's not something we struggle with in the studio. Professional lighting allows us to capture detail, texture and expression beautifully, regardless of your dog's colouring.

Pets don't need to sit perfectly still. In fact, most don't (obviously!) We photograph plenty of energetic puppies and enthusiastic dogs and have lots of tricks for capturing their attention (and the kids' attention) at just the right moment. Patience, experience and timing are often far more important than perfect obedience.

Whether you have a mischievous puppy, a loyal senior dog or a beloved pet you'd like photographed alongside your family, professional photographs become treasured reminders of a relationship that is often far too short.

At The Newport Studio, pet photography sessions are relaxed, fun and designed around your pet's personality. We welcome dogs of all ages and temperaments and can photograph them on their own or as part of a family session.

Because our pets may only be part of our lives for a chapter, but to them, we're their whole story.

The Newport Studio acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which we live and work, the Garigal people of the Dharug nation. We pay our respect to their elders past and present.
